  • Botanical Description: Red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) are easily distinguishable through their unique prop root system and viviparous seeds. The prop roots suspend the tree over the water, providing extra support and protection. They also allow the tree to combat hypoxia by facilitating direct oxygen intake through the root structure. In ideal conditions, a red mangrove can reach up to 80 feet (24 meters) in height, but it is commonly found at a more modest 20 feet (6.1 meters).
