  • Botanical Description: Costus lucanusianus is a perennial herb that typically grows as an erect, clumping plant. It can reach heights of up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet), forming dense clusters that spread from underground rhizomes. The plant features thick, fleshy stems that are characteristically spiraled, contributing to its common name. These stems are often green, sometimes with a reddish hue depending on light exposure. The leaves are large, broad, and oblong or elliptic, with a smooth texture and a glossy finish. They are arranged in a spiral fashion around the stem, which is a distinctive trait of the genus Costus. The leaves are deep green, providing a lush, vibrant appearance. The flowers of Costus lucanusianus emerge from cone-like inflorescences at the top of the stems, typically during the warmer months. Color and Shape: The inflorescences are composed of overlapping bracts, usually brightly colored in shades of red or pink. The actual flowers are small and tubular, peeking out from between the bracts, and are typically white or pale yellow with a delicate appearance. Flowering usually occurs in the late spring through summer, depending on the climate. The plant produces small capsules that contain several seeds. These fruits are generally not as ornamental as the flowers. Seed Dispersal: Seeds are dispersed by various means, including water and animals, which help in the proliferation of the species in its natural habitat.
