Botanical Description: Ananas comosus, is a herbaceous perennial that grows up to 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet) in height. The plant has a short, stout stem with a rosette of waxy, strap-like leaves. The leaves are long (up to 70 cm or more), lance-shaped, and tough with sharp spines on the edges, though cultivated varieties often have leaves that are spineless or have fewer spines. Flowers Pineapple plants produce a dense spike of many small flowers once they mature, which can take about 12-18 months from planting. The flowers are usually purple or red and later turn into berries that fuse together into a single, multiple fruit. The exact time of flowering can vary greatly depending on the climate, cultivation practices, and variety. In a natural tropical climate, pineapples can flower any time of the year. The fruit of Ananas comosus is actually a complex fruit made of many small fruits fused together around a central core; each pineapple scale is an individual fruit.
Flowering/Fruiting: Flowering generally occur around March to May. Fruiting period is generally around August to October.
